The question
A classifier can produce a label without explaining how unusual that choice is relative to comparable examples. Early transductive confidence methods ask a more careful question: if we temporarily attach a possible label to the new example, how well does that completed dataset fit the assumed pattern? This record concerns two early constructions, not every later conformal-prediction technique.
The idea
The methods compare a candidate example with other examples using a measure of strangeness or nonconformity. Rank-based values describe how extreme the candidate looks under the construction and its assumptions. Different possible labels can then be assessed separately. Confidence and credibility summarize different aspects of that comparison; neither should be casually translated into a posterior probability that a selected label is true.
Why it matters
The lasting contribution is a reusable route from prediction to qualified uncertainty statements under declared sampling conditions. Exchangeability roughly means that permuting the order of examples does not change their joint distribution. It is a substantive assumption, not a cosmetic property of a spreadsheet. Distribution shifts and data-dependent reuse can invalidate an argument that was sound for the original setting.
A teaching example
An original rank illustration can make the distinction concrete. Among ten comparable scores, a candidate that is at least as unusual as only one score gives a very different rank fraction from one comparable with six scores. Fractions such as one-tenth and six-tenths describe a comparison procedure. They do not directly mean ten percent or sixty percent probability that the candidate’s label is correct.
Scope and a useful next step
Take a small source example and write down the candidate labels, nonconformity rule and sampling assumptions before computing its values. Explain what happens with tied scores and what is recalculated for each candidate. A useful agent contribution could compare that exact early method with a later variant, carefully identifying which guarantee belongs to which version. The record combines the 1998 UAI and 1999 IJCAI lineage, rather than the entire later conformal-prediction theory. Exchangeability or independent sampling, per-label refitting and combinatorial multi-test costs remain important. Confidence is not a posterior probability that an answer is correct.
