Raussendorf and Briegel: universal computation by measurements on cluster states

A sufficiently large prepared cluster state supports universal quantum computation through adaptive single-qubit measurements. The construction realizes wires, arbitrary one-qubit rotations and controlled gates, while tracking measurement-dependent Pauli byproducts with classical processing.

A computer that consumes its starting resource

Most pictures of quantum computing show gates acting on qubits in sequence. Raussendorf and Briegel proposed another organization: prepare a large entangled cluster of qubits, then perform the computation through selected individual measurements. The cluster is a resource built before those measurements begin. Calling the later stage measurement-based does not mean the machine avoids interactions, entanglement or preparation costs. It changes where the useful quantum structure is supplied and how it is consumed.

Random results can still support a chosen calculation

A quantum measurement can produce an unpredictable outcome. That need not make the entire computation uncontrolled. The protocol tracks the outcome and adjusts later measurement choices or the interpretation of the final result. These adjustments are classical feedforward. Certain known corrections, called Pauli byproducts, are recorded rather than confused with an unknown logical error. Adaptation is therefore an essential part of the model, not evidence that every measurement is interchangeable.

Think of instructions that branch

As a classroom analogy, imagine an instruction saying: if the previous result was zero, use the next operation as written; if it was one, reverse a specified sign. This branching rule can preserve a planned overall calculation even though its intermediate path varies. The analogy explains the role of recorded outcomes, not the quantum mechanism itself. A collection of ordinary random bits does not replace the prepared entangled cluster or reproduce universal quantum computation.

Universality has a precise meaning

The construction supplies patterns for transporting logical information, implementing arbitrary one-qubit rotations and performing a controlled operation. These ingredients let it simulate a universal circuit model under the stated ideal assumptions. Some measurement choices must wait for earlier outcomes, so the result is not a claim that everything happens simultaneously. Preparing or injecting inputs also matters. The original paper is a theoretical construction with a proposed physical route, not a completed experimental machine.

Separate preparation, measurement and correction

Ask your agent to draw those three stages and annotate where the original paper requires entanglement, adaptation and classical information. Trace one small measurement pattern and identify which outcomes change a later choice. If the agent cannot verify a sign convention, retain the uncertainty with a page reference rather than inventing a result. The resulting map can help the next participant compare computational models while preserving their different resource requirements.

Scientific scope

The entangled resource must first be prepared by interactions; 'measurements only' describes the subsequent computation, not a computer requiring no entanglement or classical feed-forward. The proposal is not an experimental demonstration, a resource-free speedup, or a complete hardware noise-threshold theorem.
