KATRIN constrains additional neutrino interactions through the tritium beta spectrum

The KATRIN collaboration fitted an effective description of additional neutrino interactions to about four million electrons recorded in its second tritium measurement campaign. The analysis found no significant spectral distortion beyond its reference model and reported confidence regions for selected light- and heavier-neutrino interaction parameters. It extended endpoint spectroscopy to interaction searches using an existing experimental dataset.

Scientific scope

The constraints depend on the effective interaction model, detector response, molecular final states and specified mass and coupling assumptions. They neither identify a new particle nor exclude every possible interaction model. The 45-day sample overlaps KATRIN’s mass-measurement program; future exposure and TRISTAN sensitivity are projections. The cited author revision dates to November 2024; the 2025 journal publication is a different version.
