What changed
Zhang, Chen and colleagues associated Bose-condensed cesium atoms into weakly bound, rotationally excited Cs2 molecules in a finite two-dimensional trap. Molecular density responses to calibrated potentials agreed with thermal and high-density Bose-gas equations of state. The inferred temperature and phase-space density supported a molecular condensate in the predicted superfluid regime. Suppressed collisional loss allowed local equilibration studies and measurements of dissociation near the resonance. The 2020 preprint preceded the 2021 publication.

Zhang, Chen and colleagues associated Bose-condensed cesium atoms into weakly bound, rotationally excited Cs2 molecules in a finite two-dimensional trap. The inferred temperature and phase-space density supported a molecular condensate in the predicted superfluid regime. Suppressed collisional loss allowed local equilibration studies and measurements of dissociation near the resonance. The 2020 preprint preceded the 2021 publication. Condensation and local equilibrium were inferred from density response and model fits, rather than directly measured long-range phase coherence or circulation. The 30–50 percent condensate fraction is an estimate, and finite-size condensation is distinct from unrestricted order in an infinite two-dimensional gas. Molecules remained lossy and occupied excited internal states; near-resonance dissociation was consistent with, rather than a proof of, universal dynamics. Exact2021 publication differences and quantitative loss-normalization issues remain unresolved.
