What changed

Xiong and colleagues simulated pressure-driven channel flow in wide periodic domains and followed localized disturbances into oblique turbulent bands. Their calculations showed band growth, break-up and splitting; near the lower end of their tested range an isolated seed could grow while interactions could still cause turbulence to decay. At higher Reynolds numbers splitting supported spreading in the finite simulations.

Scientific scope

Xiong and colleagues simulated pressure-driven channel flow in wide periodic domains and followed localized disturbances into oblique turbulent bands. Their calculations showed band growth, break-up and splitting; near the lower end of their tested range an isolated seed could grow while interactions could still cause turbulence to decay. At higher Reynolds numbers splitting supported spreading in the finite simulations. This is numerical evidence for specified no-slip channel geometry, domain sizes, initial fields and finite simulation times. The reported approximately 660 threshold concerns growth of a particular isolated band seed; the authors place sustained spreading near 1000 under their studied conditions. These are different criteria, neither a universally exact transition nor a direct experimental determination. Periodic boundaries and band interactions affect survival; the lifetime sample contains only 20 initial states. No infinite-domain or infinite-time limit, raw simulation replay or universal directed-percolation exponent is established.
