What changed

Wu, Fatemi and colleagues measured gated monolayer WTe₂ devices and found an edge-dominated resistance approaching h/(2e²) in short channels, consistent with approximately e²/h conductance per edge. They observed magnetic-field suppression and a Zeeman-like conductance gap and reported edge-dominated behavior up to about 100 K.

Scientific scope

Wu, Fatemi and colleagues measured gated monolayer WTe₂ devices and found an edge-dominated resistance approaching h/(2e²) in short channels, consistent with approximately e²/h conductance per edge. They observed magnetic-field suppression and a Zeeman-like conductance gap and reported edge-dominated behavior up to about 100 K. The near-quantized value is inferred from a two-edge device and a resistance-step subtraction in the short-channel limit; longer channels show larger resistance. Three devices entered the short-length regime, and temperature dependence was shown prominently for one 100 nm channel. 100 K is an observed crossover in these samples, not a universal operating temperature; the field response and inferred Kramers point involve transport interpretation, not direct spin-resolved imaging. Earlier predictions and WTe₂ edge conduction experiments are distinct contributions. Original author v1 and supplementary pages were reviewed; formal published version and independent raw-data replay were not.
