What changed

Wheatstone develops practical adjustable-resistance and balance methods for comparing electrical circuit constants, including a differential resistance measurer whose original principle he credits to Christie.

Scientific scope

Wheatstone develops practical adjustable-resistance and balance methods for comparing electrical circuit constants, including a differential resistance measurer whose original principle he credits to Christie. The target is Wheatstone's 1843 measurement methods and constructions, especially sections 16-18, within an Ohmic, steady circuit. It is not the first invention of the balance principle: the page 325 footnote explicitly assigns that idea to Christie's 1833 work. Wire geometry, material and adjustment matter; the differential instrument is unsuitable for substances whose electrical action creates opposing electromotive forces through chemical change. The separate-source arrangement in section 17 is more sensitive but loses balance when either source changes. Other substitution methods require sufficiently constant sources or matched elements. The liquid measurements must be made before current changes the solution, and the proposed survey is deferred. The current-divider calibration instrument is matched to its own galvanometer. Historical copper-wire resistance units, author sensitivity claims and possible applications are not certified modern accuracy or deployment. no apparatus was replayed.
