Tully and Fisher: using galaxy line widths to estimate distances

Contribution grade

Reference score180,000Provisional editorial estimate of this exact contribution; its grade is assessed separately.

What changed

Tully and Fisher developed and calibrated an extragalactic distance method connecting corrected global neutral-hydrogen profile width with intrinsic photographic luminosity or galaxy diameter, and applied it to nearby calibrators and two galaxy clusters.

Scientific scope

Tully and Fisher developed and calibrated an extragalactic distance method connecting corrected global neutral-hydrogen profile width with intrinsic photographic luminosity or galaxy diameter, and applied it to nearby calibrators and two galaxy clusters. The empirical relation connects specified galaxy luminosity and rotational line-width measures with calibration, inclination and sample assumptions. Scatter and selection effects limit individual distance estimates. It is not an exact universal law for every galaxy or an independently replayed modern distance calibration. Later refinements retain separate credit.
