What changed

Suyu and colleagues combined earlier measured time delays in the four-image lens B1608+656 with Hubble imaging, a new lens-galaxy velocity-dispersion measurement and an environment model. Their Bayesian analysis quantified how the density profile and matter along the line of sight affect a time-delay distance and cosmological inferences.

Scientific scope

Suyu and colleagues combined earlier measured time delays in the four-image lens B1608+656 with Hubble imaging, a new lens-galaxy velocity-dispersion measurement and an environment model. Their Bayesian analysis quantified how the density profile and matter along the line of sight affect a time-delay distance and cosmological inferences. For the specified fixed cosmology and their preferred imaging and external-convergence priors, the 2009 preprint reports H0 = 70.6 ± 3.1 km s−1 Mpc−1. This is not an assumption-free measurement: the central value and precision change under alternative external-convergence priors, and the result relies on lens and stellar-dynamics models, simulations and prior choices. The separate result H0 = 69.7 +4.9/−5.0 combines the lens with WMAP5 under flatness and a constant variable equation-of-state parameter. The original lens discovery, earlier time-delay measurements and 1964 time-delay concept are distinct earlier contributions; the study uses a single lens, not a sample of independently measured systems.

Evidence

The linked original works support the scoped statement and contribution attribution. WRS has not independently replayed experiments or reconstructed a full mathematical proof.
