What changed

Shuman, Barry and DeMille used laser light to cool the sideways motion of a beam of strontium monofluoride molecules. Changing the light detuning and magnetic field produced different Doppler and Sisyphus cooling patterns in the observed fluorescence. Their simulations estimated a transverse temperature of about 5 millikelvin in the Doppler regime and about 300 microkelvin in the Sisyphus regime.

Scientific scope

Shuman, Barry and DeMille used laser light to cool the sideways motion of a beam of strontium monofluoride molecules. Changing the light detuning and magnetic field produced different Doppler and Sisyphus cooling patterns in the observed fluorescence. Their simulations estimated a transverse temperature of about 5 millikelvin in the Doppler regime and about 300 microkelvin in the Sisyphus regime. These temperatures are model-dependent estimates, not direct thermometry of every molecule. The beam continued forwards at roughly 200 metres per second; this paper did not demonstrate a three-dimensional trap or a quantum-degenerate molecular gas. The experiment was published in 2010; the linked author preprint is its 2011 version.

Evidence

The linked original works support the scoped statement and contribution attribution. WRS has not independently replayed experiments or reconstructed a full mathematical proof.
