Shockley and Queisser: a detailed-balance limit for solar cells

Contribution grade

Photovoltaics · Photovoltaics

Reference score210,000Provisional editorial estimate of this exact contribution; its grade is assessed separately.

What changed

Absorption and emission are combined in a detailed-balance calculation that constrains ideal p-n junction conversion as band gap and radiative recombination vary.

Scientific scope

Absorption and emission are combined in a detailed-balance calculation that constrains ideal p-n junction conversion as band gap and radiative recombination vary. The abstract assumes blackbody sun and cell temperatures of 6000 K and 300 K and an ideal radiative limit. This is not a universal ceiling for every photovoltaic design or a measured device efficiency.
