What changed

Redekop and colleagues used a nanoscale SQUID sensor to image magnetic fringe fields in twisted MoTe2 devices at 1.6 kelvin. Density-dependent magnetic features appeared near several fractional fillings, while spatial reconstruction mapped magnetization and disorder across the devices. Assuming the Chern number inferred from earlier transport, the reconstructed magnetization change near filling −2/3 implied a local thermodynamic gap of about 7 meV. The work supplied local magnetic evidence complementary to transport and optical studies of fractional Chern insulators.

Assuming the Chern number inferred from earlier transport, the reconstructed magnetization change near filling −2/3 implied a local thermodynamic gap of about 7 meV. The work supplied local magnetic evidence complementary to transport and optical studies of fractional Chern insulators. This record is supported by the May 2024 preprint. The gap estimate assumes out-of-plane magnetization, a specified Chern number, an inversion boundary condition and an empirical identification of the topological magnetization slope. The quoted local spread is not a complete experimental uncertainty. Two devices had been used in earlier transport or optical studies, so this is a new probe rather than an independent first realization. Finite applied fields were used in representative scans. Fractional charge, braiding statistics and perfect Hall quantization were not measured here.
