Rao: information bounds and a geometry of statistical populations

Contribution grade

Statistical estimation and information geometry · Statistical estimation and information geometry

Reference score260,000Provisional editorial estimate of this exact contribution; its grade is assessed separately.

What changed

Information gives regular unbiased scalar/multiparameter covariance lower bounds, while the same matrix becomes an invariant local metric on identifiable statistical populations.

Scientific scope

Information gives regular unbiased scalar/multiparameter covariance lower bounds, while the same matrix becomes an invariant local metric on identifiable statistical populations. Differentiability, justified differentiation under the integral, integrability/finite variances and the relevant nonsingular information matrix are required; a nondegenerate metric requires an identifiable regular parameterization. The bound need not be attained. Biased estimators, nonregular models and singular parameters are outside this stated scope. The paper's overstrong sufficient-statistic minimality statements and general testing claims are not adopted.
