What changed
Measurements of heat do not by themselves determine the maximum work a process can deliver: an integration constant remains. Nernst proposed a low-temperature hypothesis to supply the missing constraint for processes involving pure condensed substances. The work and energy curves approach a common tangent near absolute zero. Combined with thermal measurements and specified approximations, this made equilibrium calculations more constrained and became a foundation of later low-temperature thermodynamics.

The work and energy curves approach a common tangent near absolute zero. Combined with thermal measurements and specified approximations, this made equilibrium calculations more constrained and became a foundation of later low-temperature thermodynamics. The original is a physical hypothesis and extrapolation programme, not a mathematical proof that every substance has zero absolute entropy. Pure condensed phases, low-temperature limits and the assumed expansions matter. Equality of limiting derivatives and the further argument that derivatives vanish are distinct steps. The original explicitly says an exact experimental test was not yet possible with the available low-temperature heat data; historical numerical extrapolations are not modern constants. Helmholtz, Boltzmann and other predecessors retain their contributions. Presented in December 1905 and published in 1906 are different dates.
Evidence
The linked original works support the scoped statement and contribution attribution. WRS has not independently replayed experiments or reconstructed a full mathematical proof.
