Molecular diffraction supports phase doubling and reactive pair correlations

What changed

Nagata and colleagues used optical-lattice diffraction to probe coherence during association of cesium atoms into molecules. They reconstructed a molecular spatial phase close to twice the imprinted atomic phase, with a small correction from unequal reaction couplings. Molecular momentum populations also yielded a negative parity and a positive entanglement witness within their coherent symmetric-pair model. This extends earlier population-oscillation evidence to phase transfer and reactive pair correlations.

Scientific scope

Nagata and colleagues used optical-lattice diffraction to probe coherence during association of cesium atoms into molecules. They reconstructed a molecular spatial phase close to twice the imprinted atomic phase, with a small correction from unequal reaction couplings. Molecular momentum populations also yielded a negative parity and a positive entanglement witness within their coherent symmetric-pair model. This extends earlier population-oscillation evidence to phase transfer and reactive pair correlations. Phases and pair correlators are reconstructed from diffraction populations using specified few-mode wavefunctions, symmetry assumptions and calibration corrections. The entanglement inference concerns that model of identical atom pairs; it is not an independent Bell test or separately measured full two-particle tomography. Molecules occupy a high-lying bound state, and coherence is finite. The first report dates from 2025; the cited 2026 revision may differ from earlier and journal versions.
