What changed
Schmitt and colleagues studied transport in six encapsulated graphene devices and reported conductance consistent with a one-dimensional Klein–Schwinger electron–hole pair-creation model near current saturation. Across the device series, a fitted linear extrapolation was approximately 0.18 mS, close to the model’s 0.186 mS value.
Scientific scope
Schmitt and colleagues studied transport in six encapsulated graphene devices and reported conductance consistent with a one-dimensional Klein–Schwinger electron–hole pair-creation model near current saturation. Across the device series, a fitted linear extrapolation was approximately 0.18 mS, close to the model’s 0.186 mS value. The measured quantity is electrical conductance in graphene, not electron–positron creation from empty vacuum. The pair contribution is inferred using a device-dependent three-parameter subtraction of the intraband background; visibility varies and the effective gap and field profile involve modeling assumptions. The fitted zero-bias extrapolation is not a direct zero-bias conductance measurement. The supplemental device GrS1 has reduced mobility and accessible voltage range; its raw differential conductance shows no clear Schwinger signature, and the reported signal visibility is restored by subtracting a fitted Klein conductance. Other device-series interpretations similarly depend on this subtraction. The noise decomposition and small inferred Fano factor rely on the stated thermal and shot-noise model.
