What changed

A coherent modal framework retaining latitude-varying rotation resolves the mixed lowest westward branch, the separate Kelvin-like solution and a controlled forced-response example.

Scientific scope

A coherent modal framework retaining latitude-varying rotation resolves the mixed lowest westward branch, the separate Kelvin-like solution and a controlled forced-response example. Linear small perturbations of a homogeneous incompressible hydrostatic free-surface layer, constant mean depth, equatorial beta-plane f=beta*y, longitudinal harmonic waves and decay at meridional infinity. For n>=1 three branches; n=0 requires excluding a spurious cubic root and has a mixed westward branch; the v=0 Kelvin-like branch is separate. Finite spherical boundaries and near-equator/low-frequency approximations matter. Section 8 forced circulation uses periodic mass sources/sinks and equal linear damping; this is not free-wave observation or a universal heating response. Section 9 vertical-mode extension requires stable stratification, separability and suitable eigenfunctions/boundaries; completeness is conditional there. Prior trapping work and Rosenthal 1965 overlap are acknowledged. Original 41–42 explicitly leaves actual atmospheric/oceanic realization to testing. incomplete equation glyphs and uninspected figures prevent exact formula certification. No independent reconstruction, forecast skill test, nonlinear stability or observational discovery claimed.
