What changed

The MACHO collaboration monitored approximately 1.8 million Large Magellanic Cloud stars and reported a brightening event whose two-color light curve was broadly consistent with gravitational microlensing. Its fitted amplification and approximately month-long characteristic time illustrated the observational search for compact lensing objects suggested by Paczyński.

Scientific scope

The MACHO collaboration monitored approximately 1.8 million Large Magellanic Cloud stars and reported a brightening event whose two-color light curve was broadly consistent with gravitational microlensing. Its fitted amplification and approximately month-long characteristic time illustrated the observational search for compact lensing objects suggested by Paczyński. The 1993 report described a candidate, not conclusive identification of the lens or proof that compact objects dominate the Galactic dark halo. Lens mass, distance and transverse velocity are degenerate; its approximate 0.1-solar-mass estimate depends on a halo population model and neglected full detection efficiencies. The authors note an unexplained discrepancy near the peak and possible intrinsic stellar variability, with no source spectrum yet. The EROS collaboration also reported distinct candidate events; its results and authors are not attributed to the MACHO paper. The individual contributor list shown here is incomplete.
