What changed

The LZ Collaboration searched 5.7 tonne-years of liquid-xenon data for low-energy nuclear recoils and found evidence consistent with coherent elastic scattering of solar boron-8 neutrinos. In its no-dark-matter fit the zero-neutrino-signal hypothesis was rejected at a reported 4.5 sigma, with a best-fit 12.3 +7.0/−5.4 neutrino events. The same analysis found no significant excess attributable to light dark matter.

Scientific scope

The LZ Collaboration searched 5.7 tonne-years of liquid-xenon data for low-energy nuclear recoils and found evidence consistent with coherent elastic scattering of solar boron-8 neutrinos. In its no-dark-matter fit the zero-neutrino-signal hypothesis was rejected at a reported 4.5 sigma, with a best-fit 12.3 +7.0/−5.4 neutrino events. The same analysis found no significant excess attributable to light dark matter. The quoted significance is conditional on the paper’s no-dark-matter hypothesis, detector-response and background models; 19 selected events are not individually identified neutrinos. The fitted solar flux assumes a Standard Model scattering cross-section and mixing angle; cross-section and mixing-angle inferences each assume an external solar flux and other inputs. Neutron calibration weakly constrains yields below roughly 2.5 keV so prior measurements contribute; accidental-coincidence background is data modeled. Artificial events were injected to mitigate bias and one selected artificial event removed before the final 19-event sample. These data extend and overlap the prior LZ WIMP dataset, but this low-energy neutrino-specific outcome is a distinct analysis, not an independent exposure. Earlier PandaX-4T and XENONnT solar-neutrino indications retain credit. Numerical results are from the December 2025 author v1, not independently reconciled with the 2026 publication.
