What changed
Two teams demonstrated Raman sideband cooling of individual calcium monofluoride molecules in optical tweezers. Lu and colleagues used low magnetic fields and alternating trap depths to reduce motion along all three axes, with a radial ground-state fraction reaching about 79%. Bao and colleagues used a high-field scheme and resolved sidebands along each axis, inferring a three-dimensional motional ground-state probability of 54±18% for molecules retained in the selected internal-state manifold. Both experiments extended molecular cooling beyond optical molasses.
Scientific scope
Two teams demonstrated Raman sideband cooling of individual calcium monofluoride molecules in optical tweezers. Lu and colleagues used low magnetic fields and alternating trap depths to reduce motion along all three axes, with a radial ground-state fraction reaching about 79%. Bao and colleagues used a high-field scheme and resolved sidebands along each axis, inferring a three-dimensional motional ground-state probability of 54±18% for molecules retained in the selected internal-state manifold. Both experiments extended molecular cooling beyond optical molasses. The two experiments used different schemes and reached different states. The lowest radial and axial occupations reported by Lu occurred after different cooling sequences; that experiment did not establish the same three-dimensional ground-state fraction as Bao. Bao’s fraction applies to the selected internal-state population, with substantial leakage to other states. Thermometry assumes specified motional distributions and calibrated spectra. Quantum gates, bulk quantum degeneracy and applicability to arbitrary molecules were prospective uses.
