What changed

Liodakis and colleagues combined IXPE X-ray polarimetry with optical and radio observations of Markarian 501. Two March 2022 observations yielded X-ray polarization near 10–11%, larger than the host-corrected optical value, and polarization angles approximately aligned with the radio jet. The authors found this pattern consistent with an energy-stratified shock-acceleration scenario.

Scientific scope

Liodakis and colleagues combined IXPE X-ray polarimetry with optical and radio observations of Markarian 501. Two March 2022 observations yielded X-ray polarization near 10–11%, larger than the host-corrected optical value, and polarization angles approximately aligned with the radio jet. The authors found this pattern consistent with an energy-stratified shock-acceleration scenario. Polarization and its wavelength dependence are measured, while the shock and downstream turbulent-field explanation is model-dependent rather than a direct image of an acceleration site or a unique proof of the mechanism. The source was unresolved at IXPE resolution. Optical host-galaxy corrections assume unpolarized starlight; weather prevented simultaneous radio measurement in the second observation. Independent analysis teams used the same IXPE data, so their consistency is not independent observational replication. No intra-observation variability was detected within the reported uncertainties; the multiwavelength campaign was only partly included. The individual contributor list shown here is incomplete.
