What changed

Li, Chu, Jain and Shen predicted a disorder-induced topological regime in numerical models of HgTe quantum wells, including wells whose clean band structure was not inverted. Calculated conductance plateaus and spin-resolved transmission supported conducting helical edges. Groth and colleagues explained how disorder, together with quadratic momentum terms in the effective Hamiltonian, can reverse the topological mass. Their effective-medium calculation accounted for the weak-disorder onset in finite samples and distinguished it from the strong-disorder localization transition.

Scientific scope

Li, Chu, Jain and Shen predicted a disorder-induced topological regime in numerical models of HgTe quantum wells, including wells whose clean band structure was not inverted. Calculated conductance plateaus and spin-resolved transmission supported conducting helical edges. Groth and colleagues explained how disorder, together with quadratic momentum terms in the effective Hamiltonian, can reverse the topological mass. Their effective-medium calculation accounted for the weak-disorder onset in finite samples and distinguished it from the strong-disorder localization transition. These are predictions and numerical tests for specified noninteracting effective models, rather than electronic experimental observations or exact results for every disordered material. The effective-medium approximation describes the weak-disorder boundary but fails at strong disorder. Finite size, lead doping, spin-block coupling and the difference between a band gap and a mobility gap matter. The mechanism does not imply that adding arbitrary disorder always improves transport.
