What changed
Latacz and the BASE team implemented a double-Penning-trap procedure that repeatedly thermalizes an antiproton’s modified cyclotron motion and measures its energy, stopping when a cold state is found. They reported preparation below an energy-equivalent temperature of 200 millikelvin in about 500 seconds, with a measured thermalization time constant of 4.7±0.4 seconds. A colder prepared antiproton showed clearly separated spin-transition signals, improving nondestructive spin-state identification.

Subthermal preparation selects low-energy outcomes from repeated thermalization with an approximately four-kelvin circuit; it does not cool that entire bath to 200 millikelvin or establish the ground state of every motional mode. Spin-identification error estimates depend on thresholds and fitted noise distributions. This paper demonstrated preparation and incoherent spin-transition readout, while stronger magnetic-moment precision, coherent antiproton control and complete matter–antimatter symmetry tests require further experiments.
