What changed

Jones and colleagues used an octave-spanning mode-locked laser spectrum and self-referencing to stabilize the pulse-to-pulse carrier-envelope phase and the optical frequency comb. They checked relative phase control with a time-domain cross-correlator and measured a rubidium optical reference against a microwave clock.

Scientific scope

Jones and colleagues used an octave-spanning mode-locked laser spectrum and self-referencing to stabilize the pulse-to-pulse carrier-envelope phase and the optical frequency comb. They checked relative phase control with a time-domain cross-correlator and measured a rubidium optical reference against a microwave clock. The measured quantity is the relative carrier-envelope phase from pulse to pulse, not an independently determined absolute phase. Time-domain correlation had a phase offset attributed by the authors to correlator asymmetry and substantially greater measurement uncertainty than the frequency-domain method. The optical frequency measurement depends on the microwave reference and prior line identification. Four printed authors were marked as equal contributors. A separately recorded microwave–optical frequency-link demonstration shares related comb methods; this record concerns carrier-envelope phase stabilization and does not claim the full later frequency-metrology programme.

Evidence

The linked original works support the scoped statement and contribution attribution. WRS has not independently replayed experiments or reconstructed a full mathematical proof.
