What changed

The JADE collaboration analysed 287 hadronic electron–positron events recorded at centre-of-mass energies of 27.7 and 30 GeV. The data contained an excess of planar events relative to its two-jet fragmentation model. A rest-frame analysis of the broad side of each selected event supported a three-jet structure; comparisons with simulated quark–antiquark–gluon events supported gluon bremsstrahlung as an interpretation.

Scientific scope

The JADE collaboration analysed 287 hadronic electron–positron events recorded at centre-of-mass energies of 27.7 and 30 GeV. The data contained an excess of planar events relative to its two-jet fragmentation model. A rest-frame analysis of the broad side of each selected event supported a three-jet structure; comparisons with simulated quark–antiquark–gluon events supported gluon bremsstrahlung as an interpretation. The observed hadrons and event shapes are measured; assignment of the low-energy jet to a gluon and the bremsstrahlung interpretation use the stated fragmentation and QCD models. The analysis does not uniquely exclude every alternative model; the authors note that arbitrary non-Gaussian fragmentation tails were not tested. Their alpha_s=0.17±0.04 estimate is model-dependent and the stated uncertainty is statistical only. Additional event-selection and detector details are in a separate source. This 1980 JADE result is distinct from contemporaneous TASSO, MARK J and PLUTO studies and is not a sole-priority claim.
