Hopper: subroutine assembly in The Education of a Computer

Contribution grade

Automatic programming · Automatic programming

Reference score90,000Provisional editorial estimate of this exact contribution; its grade is assessed separately.

What changed

A compiling routine selects, adjusts and assembles catalogued subroutines to construct a UNIVAC program from a higher-level specification of routine use.

Scientific scope

A compiling routine selects, adjusts and assembles catalogued subroutines to construct a UNIVAC program from a higher-level specification of routine use. The inspected original pp.243–245 support subroutine assembly, not completion of every proposed symbolic system. This is not a claim that the tool had all properties of a modern compiler or that Hopper alone built the whole UNIVAC environment.

Evidence

Source-linked, scoped account of the original work. The published scope states the scientific assumptions and remaining verification limits. WRS has not independently certified the full proof, experimental result or system benchmark.
