What changed

Higbie and colleagues used polarization-sensitive phase-contrast imaging to repeatedly measure a component of the magnetization of trapped spin-1 rubidium-87 gas. They observed spatially resolved Larmor precession and compared the coherence of a condensate with that of a thermal cloud.

Scientific scope

Higbie and colleagues used polarization-sensitive phase-contrast imaging to repeatedly measure a component of the magnetization of trapped spin-1 rubidium-87 gas. They observed spatially resolved Larmor precession and compared the coherence of a condensate with that of a thermal cloud. The inferred local magnetization depends on column density and the optical response model. Forty consecutive images were sampled at 20 kHz, with the Larmor oscillation measured through aliasing. Probe light produced a state-dependent AC Stark shift, although the authors observed no spin flips or atom loss from the pulses. One condensate data set showed decay close to the measured atom lifetime; other runs showed unexplained shorter coherence, so this is not a universal lifetime guarantee. The 2021 generated date inside the 2005 arXiv v1 PDF is distinct from its 2005 submission date.
