What changed

Herr and colleagues reported pulse formation in a continuously driven magnesium-fluoride optical microresonator. Discrete transmission steps and a low-noise radio-frequency beat accompanied different optical spectra. Frequency-resolved optical gating reconstructed a single pulse of about 200 femtoseconds and resolved multiple pulses in other states. Coupled-mode simulations and an approximate driven nonlinear Schrödinger solution associated these states with temporal cavity solitons. The 2013 revised author version added an independent single-shot pulse-spacing check and described tuning and stability of the soliton states.

Scientific scope

The approximately 200-femtosecond pulse width is reconstructed after pump suppression, amplification and dispersion compensation. A separate single-shot temporal magnifier resolves pulse spacing but has approximately 2.5-picosecond resolution and does not itself determine pulse duration. The simulation neglects thermal effects and interactions with other mode families; the analytical soliton form is approximate. The reported stable operation requires a continuously driven, carefully tuned crystalline resonator and is not a guarantee for all platforms or conditions. The 2012 preprint and 2013 revision have different author lists; the final journal version may contain additional changes. Earlier frequency combs, cavity solitons and mode-locking work retain credit.
