What changed

Kerr microscopy of thin Cr₂Ge₂Te₆ flakes revealed a strong thickness and magnetic-field dependence of the magnetic response. Measurements reached bilayer thickness; six-layer samples showed a small remanent Kerr signal, and the characteristic temperature inferred from bilayer response increased from about 28 K to 44 K as the applied field increased from 0.065 T to 0.3 T.

Scientific scope

Kerr microscopy of thin Cr₂Ge₂Te₆ flakes revealed a strong thickness and magnetic-field dependence of the magnetic response. Measurements reached bilayer thickness; six-layer samples showed a small remanent Kerr signal, and the characteristic temperature inferred from bilayer response increased from about 28 K to 44 K as the applied field increased from 0.065 T to 0.3 T. The authors explicitly call the finite-field temperature a crossover between ferromagnetic-like and paramagnetic-like behavior; it is not automatically a zero-field thermodynamic critical temperature. Monolayers degraded and were not experimentally characterized, and bilayer and trilayer remanence was below their detection limit. The spin-wave interpretation uses approximate, rescaled exchange parameters.
