Godunov: use local wave problems to calculate shocks conservatively

Contribution grade

Reference score210,000Provisional editorial estimate of this exact contribution; its grade is assessed separately.

What changed

Godunov constructs conservative gas-dynamics updates from local discontinuity-resolution problems and proves a linear monotonicity/order barrier, while the paper’s nonlinear limit and stability claims retain explicit convergence and time-step conditions.

Scientific scope

Godunov constructs conservative gas-dynamics updates from local discontinuity-resolution problems and proves a linear monotonicity/order barrier, while the paper’s nonlinear limit and stability claims retain explicit convergence and time-step conditions. The finite-volume scheme evolves the stated conservation laws using local Riemann problems and stability restrictions. Exact local resolution does not by itself prove convergence for every nonlinear multidimensional system or arbitrary discontinuous data. Boundary treatment, time step and thermodynamic model are part of the algorithm. Later high-order and approximate solvers remain separate.
