What changed
Bowman and colleagues reported a fitted absorption-like feature in EDGES low-band radio observations centred near 78 MHz, with a best-fitting width near 19 MHz and amplitude around 0.5 K. The authors interpreted it as a possible redshifted hydrogen signal from cosmic dawn.
Scientific scope
Bowman and colleagues reported a fitted absorption-like feature in EDGES low-band radio observations centred near 78 MHz, with a best-fitting width near 19 MHz and amplitude around 0.5 K. The authors interpreted it as a possible redshifted hydrogen signal from cosmic dawn. The sky foreground is far stronger than the fitted feature; its recovery depends on foreground, beam and calibration models. The two similarly designed low-band instruments operated at the same site. The 2018 authors sought independent confirmation, and the independent SARAS 3 measurement subsequently challenged the EDGES best-fit profile with model-dependent confidence. The feature’s cosmological interpretation and proposed dark-matter explanation remain disputed, not established discoveries.
