What changed
Hubble imaging revealed an unresolved persistent source named Earendel in the strongly lensed Sunrise Arc. The discovery team interpreted its size and brightness using several lens models as a highly magnified individual star or stellar system. A later JWST NIRSpec study measured the Sunrise Arc emission-line redshift at about 5.926 and found that Earendel’s continuum can also be fit by stellar-population models for a compact star cluster.

Hubble imaging revealed an unresolved persistent source named Earendel in the strongly lensed Sunrise Arc. A later JWST NIRSpec study measured the Sunrise Arc emission-line redshift at about 5.926 and found that Earendel’s continuum can also be fit by stellar-population models for a compact star cluster. The 2022 source redshift around 6.2 was photometric and its magnification and source-size estimates depend on lens and image geometry models. The 2025 spectroscopic redshift is for the Sunrise Arc; assigning it to Earendel depends on association. A fit to a stellar population does not establish that Earendel is a cluster or rule out a single or multiple star. The NIRSpec continuum, photometry and lens magnification carry systematic uncertainties; the later analysis compares different spectral-model libraries. No source identity or population III interpretation is established conclusively.
