Nuclear transparency in pion electroproduction

Contribution grade

Nuclear Physics · Source-reported experimental result or reusable measurement method

Reference score48,000Provisional editorial estimate of this exact contribution; its grade is assessed separately.

What changed

Clasie and collaborators measured pion electroproduction on deuterium, carbon, aluminium, copper and gold targets over momentum transfers squared of approximately 1.1–4.7 (GeV/c)². Their extracted nuclear transparency and its target-mass dependence varied with momentum transfer, in better agreement with the specific calculations incorporating color transparency than with the displayed conventional calculations.

Scientific scope

Clasie and collaborators measured pion electroproduction on deuterium, carbon, aluminium, copper and gold targets over momentum transfers squared of approximately 1.1–4.7 (GeV/c)². Their extracted nuclear transparency and its target-mass dependence varied with momentum transfer, in better agreement with the specific calculations incorporating color transparency than with the displayed conventional calculations. Transparency is a model-dependent super-ratio involving a simulated reference without pion–nucleon final-state interactions, not a direct image of a small pion. Observations support the stated model comparison, not a unique proof of color transparency or QCD factorization. Model and point-to-point uncertainties are separate, the compared models share parameters, and the authors called for higher-momentum data. The individual contributor list shown here is incomplete. Figure 2 labels aluminium as 29Al while the text identifies 27Al; preserve the original discrepancy pending verification.
