What changed

The Borexino Collaboration reported evidence for solar neutrinos associated with the carbon–nitrogen–oxygen fusion cycle, extracting a small signal from electron-recoil spectra and radioactive backgrounds. In its multivariate fit the inferred interaction rate was 7.2⁺³·⁰₋₁·₇ counts per day per 100 tonnes, with a reported profile-likelihood significance of 5.1σ against the no-CNO hypothesis.

Scientific scope

The Borexino Collaboration reported evidence for solar neutrinos associated with the carbon–nitrogen–oxygen fusion cycle, extracting a small signal from electron-recoil spectra and radioactive backgrounds. In its multivariate fit the inferred interaction rate was 7.2⁺³·⁰₋₁·₇ counts per day per 100 tonnes, with a reported profile-likelihood significance of 5.1σ against the no-CNO hypothesis. The signal is inferred statistically from elastic electron scattering, not identification of the originating nuclear branch for each event. Its extraction depends on a model-constrained pep-neutrino rate, relative CNO spectral components and an upper constraint on the ²¹⁰Bi background inferred from ²¹⁰Po under equilibrium and spatial-uniformity assumptions. The separate counting cross-check on overlapping data reports about 3.5σ, not a second independent discovery. The CNO result alone is compatible with both high- and low-metallicity solar models and does not resolve the solar-metallicity problem. Source is the 2021 v2 author manuscript for the 2020 reported result; exact formal-version comparison, raw data and analysis replay remain open.
