Bogoliubov: collective excitations of a weakly interacting Bose condensate

What changed

Weakly interacting atoms can move collectively in a way that individual free particles cannot describe. Bogoliubov’s 1947 approximation replaces the difficult interacting Bose gas near a condensate by elementary quasiparticle excitations. The resulting spectrum is sound-like at small momentum and approaches free-particle behaviour at large momentum under the stated interaction assumptions. The transformation supplies a reusable microscopic framework, while the original explicitly builds on earlier Bose-gas and Landau superfluidity ideas.

Scientific scope

Weakly interacting atoms can move collectively in a way that individual free particles cannot describe. The resulting spectrum is sound-like at small momentum and approaches free-particle behaviour at large momentum under the stated interaction assumptions. The transformation supplies a reusable microscopic framework, while the original explicitly builds on earlier Bose-gas and Landau superfluidity ideas. A controlled-regime physical approximation and mechanism, not an exact finite-N solution or a general rigorous proof of superfluidity in liquid helium. Weak interaction, weak excitation, small condensate depletion and the thermodynamic homogeneous setting are essential. Quasiparticle interactions vanish only at retained quadratic order; higher terms supply relaxation and interactions. Positive ν(0) is used within the small-interaction stable-model analysis, not a universal sufficient condition for arbitrary potentials or observed critical velocities. The hard-core/scattering substitution and extension to real liquids are proposed steps, not a proof that strong-coupling helium is fully solved.
