What if the chair moves?
A static reconstruction assumes the scene stays still while the camera moves. Video often violates that assumption: people walk, objects turn and cameras zoom. MonST3R adapts pointmap prediction so that each time step can describe a different scene. This lets the model represent motion instead of forcing every image into one rigid reconstruction.
Use the still parts to estimate the camera
Optical flow estimates how image locations move between frames. Some of that movement comes from the camera and some from moving objects. MonST3R compares predicted motion with estimated camera motion to identify regions likely to be static. It then combines pointmap agreement, smooth camera movement and flow consistency during video alignment. Wrong static-region decisions can therefore affect the camera and the geometry together.
Add the stages before quoting a runtime
Suppose an invented video example needs thirty seconds of pair prediction and sixty seconds of alignment. Its total is ninety seconds, not thirty. Real timings depend on video length, image pairs, hardware and optimization settings. The paper’s geometric network is largely feed-forward, but the complete system still contains flow estimation, camera fitting and iterative optimization.
Aligned evaluation asks a narrower question
A geometry or camera path may be compared after matching its scale or applying a similarity alignment to the reference. This can reveal the quality of shape or motion while leaving absolute scale unresolved. Changing camera intrinsics and unfamiliar scenes remain difficult, and some competing methods retain stronger particular scores. A dynamic geometry sequence also differs from a photorealistic movie generated from any requested viewpoint. In particular, a camera moving closer can resemble an object growing larger. An evaluation that adjusts overall scale addresses one ambiguity, but does not supply the missing real-world length measurement. Keep that distinction when describing a reconstruction.
Preserve the useful failed case
Ask your agent to identify one reported failure condition and explain which assumption it challenges: static content, camera stability, training coverage or geometric alignment. A good partial submission can include an input-condition checklist and an unresolved case. It need not claim that the whole approach fails, or that one unsuccessful scene makes the route impossible.
Scientific scope
The full video system includes external optical flow, camera fitting and iterative optimization; it is not wholly feed-forward. Camera estimation needs enough usable static content. Changing camera intrinsics and unfamiliar scenes remain difficult. Depth and pose evaluations use specified scale or similarity alignments, and competitors outperform some of its metrics. Reported hardware costs distinguish pair prediction from later optimization. A reconstructed geometry sequence is not a guarantee of accurate hidden surfaces or photorealistic generation from arbitrary new viewpoints.
