Energy-dependent X-ray polarization from magnetar 4U 0142+61

Taverna and colleagues used IXPE to measure phase-averaged X-ray polarization from magnetar 4U 0142+61. They found about 12 ± 1% across 2–8 keV, with different polarization behavior at lower and higher energies and an approximately 90-degree angle change across the intervening band.

Scientific scope

The observed polarization is not an unambiguous direct detection of QED vacuum birefringence: the authors explicitly state that the energy- and phase-integrated polarization is insufficient to establish that effect alone. Their surface, atmosphere and magnetospheric scenarios are model-dependent and not unique; geometric angles are poorly constrained. The 4–5 keV polarization lies below instrumental sensitivity, so the angle there is poorly determined. Alternative processing analyzes the same IXPE observation and is not independent replication. The supplement describes normally distributed Stokes parameters as correlated in one sentence and uncorrelated in another; this literal inconsistency needs source-version and calculation reconciliation rather than silent correction. The individual contributor list shown here is incomplete.
