Ferromagnetism and tunable topology in the second moiré band of MoTe2

Separate experiments by Park and colleagues and by Fan Xu and colleagues used magnetotransport and magnetic circular dichroism to study the second moiré band of twisted bilayer MoTe2. Both found ferromagnetic responses near three holes per moiré cell and magnetic-field-induced Chern states. Park and colleagues compared twist angles and observed a high-field Chern-number −2 state near filling −2. Fan Xu and colleagues mapped intermediate-angle devices and found an additional resistance upturn near filling −5/2 that was strongly suppressed by perpendicular field.

Scientific scope

The two experiments used different devices and analysis conventions. Zero-field transport near filling −3 was not fully quantized; Chern assignments combine Hall response, density-field slopes and calculations. Neither study established a fractional Chern state or non-Abelian anyons in the second band. Twist thresholds, magnetic mechanisms and the interpretation of the resistance upturn remain dependent on finite-device evidence and theoretical models.
