SARAS 3 tests a reported cosmic-dawn absorption profile

The SARAS 3 radiometer measured a sky-averaged radio spectrum and compared it with the absorption profile previously reported by EDGES. With the paper’s foreground and calibration model, its fit disfavoured the earlier best-fitting profile at 95.3% confidence; the authors also tested the wider set of profiles allowed by EDGES.

What is recorded here?

Scientific scope

This is an independent observational challenge to a specific earlier best-fit profile, not a detection of the cosmic-dawn 21-cm signal or proof that every possible 21-cm absorption profile is absent. The reported 95.3% applies to one best-fit template; the paper gives 90.4% for the weighted set of allowed profiles. Results rely on the selected 55–85 MHz science band, sixth-order foreground model, assumed systematic-error treatment and finite sensitivity. The cause of the EDGES spectral feature is not independently identified. The EDGES report is recorded separately with its own authors.
