PHENIX compares high-momentum hadrons in gold and deuteron–gold collisions

PHENIX measured high-transverse-momentum charged hadrons in gold–gold collisions at 200 GeV per nucleon pair and compared them with neutral-pion and nucleon-collision references. Central gold–gold collisions showed strong suppression, whereas the deuteron–gold control showed no comparable suppression and a modest charged-hadron enhancement. Together the measurements support a dense-medium final-state interpretation.

Scientific scope

The comparison is restricted to the cited collision energies, centrality selections, midrapidity acceptance and measured momentum ranges. The charged-hadron proton–proton reference was constructed using the neutral-pion spectrum and a hadron-to-pion ratio, and binary-collision normalization uses a Glauber model. Suppression is an observation; parton energy loss and the microscopic state of the medium are interpretations, not a direct unique identification from these measurements alone.
