What is recorded here?
Newton used prism arrangements to separate sunlight and test selected parts of its spectrum with a second prism. Different parts retained different refractive behavior, while bringing the separated light together reproduced white light. The experiments distinguish a heterogeneous incident beam from colours created solely by an imperfect prism. Selection with apertures and another prism tests the separated components; lens recombination tests the mixture account of white light. The paper asks for careful separation and dark-room controls. Newton's mechanics and calculus remain different contributions, and later optical investigations retain their own authorship.

Scientific scope
The target is the 1672 letter's prism selection and recomposition evidence, based on experiments reported as begun in 1666. Its historical statements about all colours, all materials and impossible lens correction are not adopted as modern universal laws. This does not establish corpuscular light, all colour perception or the later full Opticks program.

Newton: white light as a mixture of differently refracted rays
