Pressure profiles map Fermi-gas thermodynamics across tunable interactions

Nascimbène, Navon and colleagues used images of trapped lithium atoms to reconstruct local pressure and the equation of state of a strongly interacting Fermi gas. At unitarity, their measurements mapped temperature dependence and the change between normal and superfluid behavior. They then varied the interaction strength across the BEC–BCS crossover, measuring balanced-superfluid thermodynamics and phase boundaries in spin-imbalanced gases. The data quantitatively tested beyond-mean-field corrections and many-body calculations, while identifying where a simple gas of polarons ceased to describe the normal phase.

Scientific scope

Local homogeneous properties are inferred from trapped density profiles using equilibrium, a local-density approximation, trap calibration and reference equations of state. The low-temperature crossover data approximate zero temperature; interpolation and limiting expansions constrain parts of the reported surface. Fitted coefficients and phase boundaries retain their stated uncertainties and model inputs. These experiments do not measure every temperature and spin imbalance, prove exact many-body formulas or directly observe a microscopic pairing mechanism.
