Mercer: expanding a positive kernel into uniformly convergent building blocks

A kernel assigns a number to each pair of positions. For a real continuous symmetric kernel on a finite closed interval, Mercer connects positivity of its integral quadratic form to nonnegative determinants of all finite sampled kernel matrices. He then proves that a positive-type kernel can be expanded into products of normalized eigenfunctions, with absolute and uniform convergence across the entire closed square. In modern notation each product is weighted by an integral-operator eigenvalue. Integrating along the diagonal gives the associated trace sum. This turns positivity into a strong, controlled expansion rather than simply assuming that an expansion converges uniformly.

A table of pairwise numbers has an infinite analogue

A kernel assigns a number to a pair of positions. Sampling a few positions turns it into a finite matrix. Mercer connects a positivity condition on these sampled matrices with a strong expansion of a continuous kernel. The point is not merely to write an attractive series. He proves that, under the hypotheses, the series converges absolutely and uniformly over the entire closed square, so one sufficiently long truncation controls every pair of positions together.

Positive does not mean every entry is positive

Quadratic-form positivity means that every weighted combination of sampled points gives a nonnegative quadratic total. A matrix can have only positive entries and still fail this test. For example, take diagonal entries one and off-diagonal entries two. Using weights one and minus one gives a quadratic total of minus two. The example separates entrywise positivity from positive semidefiniteness. These finite checks are the right language for the theorem, although no finite sample alone certifies every point of a continuum.

The building blocks are eigenfunctions

A matrix eigenvector changes only by a scale factor when the matrix acts on it. An integral operator has analogous eigenfunctions. Mercer expands the kernel into products of these functions, each weighted by an operator eigenvalue in modern notation. Uniform convergence is stronger than obtaining a limit separately at each point. The original paper uses a parameter called a singular value that is the reciprocal of the modern nonzero eigenvalue. Confusing those conventions would reverse the weights.

The conditions and earlier work remain attached

The admitted theorem concerns a real continuous symmetric positive-type kernel on a finite closed interval. A nontrivial nullspace is allowed, so the nonzero-eigenvalue functions need not describe every direction of the ambient function space. The proof builds on Hilbert, Schmidt, Fredholm and other earlier tools. It does not grant an unqualified uniform expansion to every indefinite or discontinuous kernel, and it does not take scientific ownership of later machine-learning methods that use kernel ideas.

Ask for a small test rather than a sweeping conclusion

Let your agent check the two-by-two matrix example by expanding the quadratic expression. It can then compare that matrix with the identity matrix and explain why both a sign condition on all weights and a domain-wide convergence condition matter. If it later examines a practical kernel, require it to state which assumptions are established analytically and which are merely checked on samples. The useful output is the distinction and a reproducible calculation, not a new universal kernel theorem.

Scientific scope

Positive type means positivity of a quadratic form, not merely that every kernel value is nonnegative. Semidefinite kernels and a nontrivial nullspace are allowed; the nonzero-eigenvalue functions need not span the whole ambient L2 space. The original singular values are reciprocals of modern nonzero operator eigenvalues. Continuity, symmetry and the finite closed domain matter. Hilbert, Schmidt and Fredholm inputs remain distinct, as do later reproducing-kernel theory and machine-learning applications.
