Spin-dependent phase separation in a one-dimensional Fermi gas

Liao, Rittner and colleagues measured spin-resolved density profiles of an attractively interacting lithium-6 gas confined to an array of narrow tubes. Unlike the paired central region familiar from three-dimensional experiments, their partially polarized core was surrounded by paired or fully polarized wings as the spin imbalance changed. The measured radii mapped a phase-separation diagram and were compared with finite-temperature thermodynamic Bethe-ansatz calculations. The experiment supplied a controlled setting in which theories predict one-dimensional FFLO-like pairing correlations.

Scientific scope

The measurement resolves the tube bundle, with central-tube properties inferred through symmetry assumptions, inverse Abel analysis and a model-supported relation between the bundle and central radii. Temperature and theoretical phase boundaries rely on a quasi-one-dimensional model with confinement corrections. Density agreement does not directly measure finite-momentum pairs, an oscillating order parameter, superfluid coherence or FFLO correlations; the authors explicitly leave such observations for later work.
