What is recorded here?
Ji and colleagues used exciton-resonant microwave impedance microscopy to image a dual-gated twisted MoTe2 device at zero magnetic field. Near fillings −2/3 and −3/5, spatial maps showed a suppressed bulk response surrounded by enhanced edge response, supporting the expected bulk–edge structure of fractional Chern insulators. A light-activated monolayer WS2 top gate enabled microwave access while retaining electrostatic control. Density and displacement-field scans followed the evolution between bulk-insulating, edge-enhanced and metallic regimes.

Scientific scope
This record follows the April 2024 preprint. Microwave admittance provides a local conductivity/compressibility proxy with model-dependent response, rather than a direct measurement of quantized Hall conductance or quasiparticle charge. The approximately 500 nm edge-response width can reflect collective magnetoplasmons and is not the microscopic electronic edge width. Filling assignments, gating disorder and selected device regions matter. Neighboring fractional-state domains did not demonstrate controlled anyon braiding, non-Abelian excitations or a universally protected interface.
