Fermi-surface reconstruction and a high-field re-entrant insulator in twisted WSe2

Ghiotto, Wei, Song and colleagues mapped longitudinal and Hall transport in a 4.2-degree twisted bilayer WSe2 device. They found an enhanced low-field Hall response away from exact half filling, consistent with reconstructed small Fermi pockets. Near one hole per moiré cell, a low-field correlated insulator gave way to metallic transport around 5 T and a second insulating region above about 24 T. Temperature dependence, Hall sign changes and Landau-level trajectories motivated interpretations in terms of antiferromagnetic reconstruction and a high-field Ising excitonic insulator.

Scientific scope

The observed contributions are finite-device transport patterns and fitted activation scales. Antiferromagnetic order, spin-density-wave structure and electron-hole binding are theoretical interpretations rather than direct measurements of the microscopic order. High-field Hall plateaus do not by themselves establish an exciton condensate, superfluidity or a uniquely identified topological excitonic phase. The entry follows the May 2024 preprint, including its two supplementary figures.
