Tracking stress-energy connects small bodies to geodesic and Lorentz-force limits

Geroch and Weatherall introduced a stress-energy tracking condition that connects smooth extended bodies to point-particle limits. A conserved collection satisfying the dominant energy condition and tracking a timelike curve contains a rescaled sequence converging to a point-mass distribution; the curve is therefore geodesic. A charged extension with uniformly bounded charge-to-mass ratio yields a Lorentz-force limit. Applications characterize optical limits of source-free Maxwell fields and distinguish fixed-parameter Klein–Gordon packets from classical limits allowing their mass parameter to vary.

Scientific scope

The results require precise energy, conservation and tracking hypotheses on a fixed background. They do not supply finite-body trajectory errors or self-force corrections. The Klein–Gordon timelike result allows varying mass parameters; it does not hold for one fixed positive parameter. Exact charged-packet classification inside the permitted charge-to-mass interval, general forces, Yang–Mills and Dirac extensions remain partly open. Earlier geodesic principles and self-gravitating limits are credited separately.
