Neutron spectroscopy measures lattice vibration dispersion in aluminium

B. N. Brockhouse and A. T. Stewart used neutron spectroscopy on a single crystal of aluminium to probe lattice vibrations. In Brockhouse’s later account, energy-resolved neutron groups measured at different crystal orientations yielded phonon frequency and wave vector through conservation relations. Subsequent measurements and comparison with other laboratories produced dispersion curves along selected symmetry directions and exposed limitations in simple interatomic-force models.

Scientific scope

Brockhouse and Stewart’s 1955 paper is the original aluminium contribution. A later participant account combines measurements from several groups and later work in its dispersion figure, so the full plotted dataset is not attributable solely to the initial experiment. The germanium study with Iyengar is a distinct contribution; uncertainties and the assumptions of lattice models still matter.
