Gemini 4 Carbon tops a test index. Should you switch?

A new model can lead a broad comparison while a different tool still suits your job. Learn to read the result, check access and make a tiny comparison of your own.

My reading

Can you use it?

Google is initially offering Carbon to selected cyber defenders and trusted partners through Fairwind. General consumer and developer access has no announced date. A Gemini subscription does not establish that you can use Carbon today.

Cost and access details

Google announces API introductory rates of US$2 per million input tokens and US$10 per million output tokens, later US$4/US$20. The introductory end date is unknown. These are separate from app subscriptions. The paper exercise below costs nothing.

What this changes for you

Before changing an assistant, identify the work you need to finish. A headline score helps you choose what to investigate; a small check helps you decide what to use.

The exciting result, and the question it leaves you

Google announced Gemini 4 Carbon on 28 October. Artificial Analysis reports a score of 59 on its Intelligence Index v5 with high reasoning, while placing it behind Opus 5.5 on its coding-agent comparison. That is a useful reason to investigate. It also shows why a single headline cannot answer every question about which assistant to use.

Think of choosing a bicycle. A bike can win an overall review while another carries your shopping more easily. The review has not become useless; you need to inspect the part that matters to you. With an assistant, that part might be keeping dates correct, explaining a lesson or repairing a small program. Name your job before reading the winner’s badge.

THE IDEA, VISUALLYFrom a headline to a useful comparison
  1. Read the exact test and setup

  2. Check actual product access

  3. Write checks for your own job

  4. Compare accepted work and repairs

Make the hidden task mix visible

A benchmark is a defined collection of tasks and a way of judging the answers. An index combines results into a broader measure. Its value is meaningful within that method; the number 59 does not mean that 59% of your future requests will succeed. A coding agent also includes software that gives the model tools and carries work between steps. Changing that setup can change the result.

Here is an invented comparison, not the Artificial Analysis formula or a test of any named model. Red passes five of five writing checks, five of five code checks and two of five receipt checks. Blue passes four writing checks, three code checks and four receipt checks. Give every check one point. Red scores 5 + 5 + 2 = 12 out of 15; Blue scores 4 + 3 + 4 = 11 out of 15.

Which would you choose for receipts? Blue passed four of those five checks, compared with Red’s two. Red has the higher combined total, yet Blue did better at this particular job. These fictional counts illustrate task fit. They do not establish how either would behave on a new receipt, or how much checking a real person would need.

A model announcement is not a button in your account

The access details above come before a purchase decision. A company can announce a model, allow a selected group to test it, and release it more widely later. Those are separate events. A paid subscription with a familiar product name does not automatically include every model the company has announced.

Check the actual product surface: the consumer app, a coding tool or the developer API. Then look for the model shown in your account and the feature you need. If it is unavailable, record that fact and use an existing tool for the practice task. You can build a sensible comparison sheet while waiting; you do not need to buy a plan on the assumption that it opens a preview.

Turn the headline into one useful check

Make a fictional club notice with a supplied day, venue and closing time. Ask two assistants you already have to rewrite it in plain English. Before asking, write three checks: the date stays unchanged, the venue stays unchanged, and the closing time stays unchanged. Add a fourth check for the tone you want. Keep the original notice beside each answer.

If one answer changes the closing time, mark that check as failed even if the prose is beautiful. Ask for one repair and keep both versions. Record the visible model, product, date, any interruption and the time you actually spent checking. Leave unmeasured costs and times blank. A useful small result can be a checked notice and an honest record of where the first answer went wrong.

This is a first test, not a universal league table. If you later need receipts or a working page, prepare checks for that different job. The important habit is portable: take a broad result seriously, find the missing conditions and test the work you intend to accept.

What the evidence establishes

Google’s announcement and Artificial Analysis’s own evaluation establish different things: availability plans and measured performance under a test setup. Neither is a WRS consumer trial. Keep the chosen model, effort and tool setup beside a result.

Try a prediction

Red scores 12/15 overall and Blue scores 11/15. Red passes 2/5 receipt checks; Blue passes 4/5. Which result matters first if your next job is a receipt?

Show the explanation

Start with the receipt checks: Blue did better there, four of five against two of five. The overall totals combine different jobs. They do not guarantee the next result, so keep the actual receipt checks visible. These are invented counts, unrelated to the published Intelligence Index score.

One small thing to try

On paper, total Red’s and Blue’s fifteen fictional checks and choose one for the receipt task. Then, if existing assistants are available, compare one invented notice with four prewritten checks. Keep both outputs and one repair. Record unavailable models as unavailable; do not buy access, scan a system or connect an account.

Practice brief, not an observed customer result. Use existing tools and public or invented inputs; stop before spending, connecting an account or publishing.
