Is it a fit for you?
You want one place to explore an idea, shape a draft and turn a small set of files into useful work. It is a sensible first trial for someone who has not yet settled on one workflow.
Start small. Keep the useful result.
For everyday Chat, turn your rough email notes into a 120-word message and check names, dates and promises. For Work/Codex, if already available, use a fictional two-line receipt and ask for quantities, line totals and unknown charges. Compare every cell with the original before trying a higher effort setting. These are suggested checks, not WRS trials. Terra and Sol are not ordinary Chat models.
Suggested practice, not a newly observed product trial. Use public or non-sensitive inputs.
The trade-off
Terra’s new reports cover a custom tool harness and the API. The screen test retained mistakes; the short API sample gained no accuracy from Max over Medium. These do not establish free Chat performance or long-project reliability. Inspect the actual model and check the output.
Is free enough? When would I pay?
Start free for occasional drafting and explanations. Consider Plus at the listed US$20/month only when a feature or allowance you actually need interrupts recurring useful work. Track a few representative sessions, including corrections. Work/Codex shares an allowance; buying API credit does not expand an app plan. Do not pay just to obtain a model name.

What you can try
- Discuss and revise a draft
- Search for current sources
- Compare supplied documents and data
- Use Work or Codex for supported tool tasks
Access and cost
Consumer Chat and Work/Codex are separate surfaces. OpenAI says GPT-6.1 Terra is available in Work/Codex on eligible paid plans, but not in ordinary Chat; GPT-6.1 Sol is also a Work/Codex model. Check your account, workspace controls and allowance. Work/Codex share plan usage; the developer API is billed separately.

Make the choice with your own task
New Terra reports concern Work/Codex or an API harness, not free Chat. Small patch and invoice tests show useful results alongside screen-reading and arithmetic failures. Effort, tools and checking change the cost. Inspect the product surface and keep a copy of the original input.
- Open an account and plan you are authorized to use. Look for the feature needed by your task.
- Copy the public example brief, or substitute a small piece of your own non-sensitive work.
- Inspect the output. Record the corrections, any quota encountered, and the price actually shown to you.
- Try an alternative only when there is a concrete unmet need. Keep the useful output and checking method.
